Kaburba renkontiĝo
La 30an de Oktobro rekontiĝis 10 Kaburbaj esperantistoj kaj unu el Johanesburgo. La renkontiĝo okazis en kafejo en la kvartalo Constantia, malantaŭ la fama Tablo-monto.

Inter la partoprenintoj preskaŭ duonon povis paroli Esperanton. Sean Ravenscroft kaj Emile Malanda, kune kun la gasto Johan Kohler estas sufiĉe spertaj Esperantistoj.  Richard Cooke, kiu unua foje renkontis Esperantistojn estas memlerninto kaj bone parolis Esperanton. Fabian Kunnen, eksterlandano, ĝojis finfine trovi aliajn Esperantistojn junajn.  La renkontiĝo organiziĝis pere de Meetup.com. Chelsea Manning antaŭnelonge aliĝis la Meetup-grupon, sed, Anne Taylor kaj Jonathan Lee Ching jam delonge estas membroj.  Jonathan antaŭnelonge fariĝis la organizanto de Kaburbaj renkontiĝoj pere de Meetup.    Bernadette Dimbi jam de 2013 estas membro de la Kaburba Esperanto-Klubo organizita de Emile Malanda, kaj Henoc kaj Justin Le Bon estis (laŭ scio de la verkisto) interesuloj pri Esperanto.

Cape Town meeting
On 30 October 10 Capetonian esperants and one from Johannesburg got torgether.  The meeting took place in a cafe in the suburb Constantia, behind the famous Table Mountain.

Among the participants about half could speak Esperanto. Sean Ravenscroft and Emile Malanda, together with the guest Johan Kohler are quite experienced Esperantists.  Richard Cooke, who met Esperantists for the first time is self-taught and spoke Esperanto well. Fabian Kunnen, a foreigner, was happy to finally find other young Esperantists.  The meeting was organised throuĝ Meetup.com.  Chelsea Manning recently joined the Meetup group, but Anne Taylor and Jonathan Lee Ching have been members for a long time.  Recently Jonathan became the organiser of Cape Town meetings through Meetup.  Bernadette Dimbi has been a member of the Cape Town Esperanto Club, organised by Emile Malanda, since 2013 and Henoc and Justin Le Bon are (as far as the author is aware) newly interested in Esperanto.

Belga Esperantisto Andre de Marque kaj sia ne-esperantista edzino Anne-Marie venis al Sudafriko por kelksemajna vojaĝo.  

Ili uzis Pasportan Servon por aranĝi tranokton ĉe la verkisto, kaj ankaŭ Servas kaj la proprajn kontaktojn dum la vojaĝo. Tiel ili malpliigis restadon en hoteloj. 

En Johanesburg malgranda grupo renkontis Andre ĉe tre agrabla restoracio "The Living Room" en la kvartalo Maboneng. Pro la programo de  la vizitanto, la kunveno devis okazi Ĵaŭdon, kaj eble pro tio ne pli da homoj povis partopreni.

La loko estas vidinda, speciale la unuan Ĵaŭdon de ĉiu monato. Tiun tagon la loko estas elirpunkto por malferma vespero de apudaj muzeoj kaj galerioj.  Oni disponeblas mapon kiu montras ĉiujn lokojn kiuj partoprenas tiun ĉi aranĝon, nomata "First Thursdays" (Unuaj Ĵaŭdoj)

La babilado inter la partoprenintoj estis vigla kaj interesa.  Ĉiuj multe ĝuis la vesperon.

Belgian Esperantist Andre de Marque and his non-esperanto-speaking wife, Anne-Marie, came to South Africa for trip of several weeks.

They used Pasporta Servo (Passport Service, a couch-surfing network for Esperanto speakers) to arrange to stay over at the author's place, and also Servas and their own contacts during the trip.  In this way they reduced hotel stays.
In Johannesburg  a  small group met Andre at a very nice restaurant, "The Living Room", in the Maboneng precinct.  Owing to the visitor's schedule, the meeting had to take place on a Thursday, and maybe for this reason not many people were able to take part.

The venue is worth seeing, especially on the first Thursday of each month.  On that day the venue is the departure point for an open night of the nearby museums and galleries.  A map is made available which shows all the venues participating in this arrangement called "First Thursdays".

The conversation among the participants was lively and interesting.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Esperanto unue publikiĝis je 1887. Ĝi estas unu el pluraj konstruitaj_lingvoj* kreitaj kun diversaj celoj.
 
Ĝi fartis pli bone ol aliaj – parte ĉar D-ro LL Zamenhof*, kiu kreis ĝin, komprenis ke uzo de lingvo per realaj homoj nepre signifos kulturo. Li tradukis gravaj verkoj* kaj verkis poezio (ekz.-o*) por elprovi la lingvon, kaj lasis la homa uzo gvidi ĝian evolucion.
 
La lingvo altiris milionojn. Parolintaj persekutiĝis per Stalin kaj Hitler – la hostorio rakontiĝas en la libro La Danĝera Lingvo* de Ulrich Lins. Interesiĝo kreskis kaj malpliiĝis je la 1970-aj jaroj, do reviviĝis kun la kresko de la interreto.

​Esperantoland
History  A major idea behind Esperanto is that if everyone shares a second language, the risks of linguistic and cultural domination can be lessened (Patricia Ryan talk, UEA to UN, Global Harmony).
 
Esperanto was first published in 1887. It is one of many constructed languages created with varied aims.  
 
It fared better than others – partly because Dr LL Zamenhof, who created it, understood that real people using a language would necessarily mean culture. He translated major works and wrote poetry to test the language, and let people’s use of it guide its evolution.
 
The language attracted millions. Speakers were persecuted by Stalin and Hitler – the story is told in Ulrich Lins’ book The Dangerous Language. Interest peaked and faded in the 1970s, then revived with the rise of the internet.

Maboneng (Lumejo) estas kvartalo en la centro de Johanesburgo. Dum la pasintaj jaroj oni multe plibonigis ĝin.  Oni renovigis multajn malnovajn konstruaĵojn, el kiuj oni faris etaĝdomoj.  En kelkaj etaĝdomoj troviĝas apartamentoj kaj laborlokoj artistaj.  Nuntempe en la kvartalo estas diversaj restoracioj, galerioj, muzeoj kaj butikoj.   

La 28an de Aŭgusto okazis renkontiĝon en tiu ĉi kvartalo, gastigata de loĝanto Andres Ilves. Partoprenis kvin Johanesburganoj kaj du Pretorianoj.  

Maboneng (Place of Light) is a neighbourhood in the centre of Johannesburg.  During the past years it has been greatly developed.   Many old buildings were renovated, some of which were turned into apartment blocks.  In several blocks there are apartments and artists' work-spaces.  Nowadays there is a variety of restaurants, galleries, museums and boutiques in the area.

On 28 August a meeting took place in this neighbourhood, hosted by resident Andres Ilves.  Five Joburgers and two Pretorians participated.

La retejo sube priskribas la diversajn grupojn laŭteme: Kulturo, Lingvoj, Ludoj, Agado, Homoj, Eventoj, ktp. Oni tuj rimarkas interesaĵojn kiel "Glumarkujo" kaj "Ridigu min!" en la grupo Kulturo, kaj en la grupo Ludoj "Forgesemuloj (Homlupo amnezia)" por ludi la samnoman ludon kontraŭ roboto.  Ĉi-kaze, "roboto" estas programo kiu agas kiel uzanto de Telegramo.

La kreintoj estas Chuck Smith kaj Evildea, du Esperantistoj famaj pro iliaj aktivado en interreto.

Facebook is a very popular social network with diverse communties of Esperanto speakers

Telegram
In South Africa, the service Telegram is not well known, especially compared to Whatsapp, which is a similar service.  A big community of Esperanto speakers can be found on Telegram.
The website below describes the various groups according to theme:  Culture, Languages, Activism, People, Events, etc.  One immediately notices curiositise such as "Stickerland" and " Make me laugh"  in the group Culture, and in the group Games "Forgetful people (Amnesiac Werewolf)" for playing the game of the same name against a bot.  In this case a bot is a program which acts as a Telegram user.

Amikumu
Amikumu is a new thing.  It is an app for mobile phones which aims to link the user with Esperanto-speakers nearby.  Eventually it will also support searching speakers of other languages.

The creators are Chuck Smith and Evildea, two Esperantist who are famous for their online activism.

Currently the creators are using the website "Kickstarter" to attract financial support for the project.

Kial kaj kiel la afero efektiviĝis?
Nord-Ameriko povas esti malfacila loĝloko por Esperantisto. Ni rigardas envie al la bunteco de Esperantaj aranĝoj en Eŭropo, kie la multlingveco levas la lingvan problemon pli alte en la socian konscion. Tie ĉi la distancoj estas longaj kaj, se ne ekzistas forta loka klubo, multaj esperantistoj tre malofte havas la okazon ĝui la etoson de Esperanta aranĝo, aŭ eĉ paroli la lingvon vizaĝ-al-vizaĝe.

Aparte lamentinda estas tiu stato, kiam en nia kontinento aperas nova ondo de lernantoj dank’ al la furora programaro Duolingo. Pli ol 500 000 homoj nun registris sin kiel lernantojn de Esperanto ĉe tiu programaro, kaj ĉiutage 30 homoj finas la bazan kurson. Ĉar la kurso uzas la anglan lingvon, tre granda proporcio de tiuj lernantoj loĝas en Nord-Ameriko.

Do kiel kapti tiun ondon, kaj enkonduki la novulojn en nian komunumon antaŭ ol ili perdos intereson? Tio estis la defio, kiun mi rigardis, kiam oni petis min fariĝi la kunordiganto de junula agado de Kanada Esperanto-Asocio (KEA). La instigo al la kreo de tiu posteno estis mia propono, ke Toronto gastigu IJK-on en 2019, se Montrealo gastigos la UK-on. Por fari tion ni devos unue revigligi nian junularan sekcion Junularo Esperantista Kanada (JEK)!

Mi akceptis la ŝarĝon hezite, ĉar mi ne plu estas junulo, sed ne estis memevidenta kandidato de la ĝusta aĝo, do mi akceptis kun la penso, ke mia unua tasko estus trovi mian posteulon! Do, kiel allogi agemajn junulojn? Aŭ agemigi la jam allogitajn? Ĉar tro malfacilas junigi la jam agemajn allogitajn, tiuj restis la solaj ebloj. Ĉe MeKaRo en Majo 2016 mi multe diskutis la aferon kun miaj geamikoj.

Nu, junuloj lastatempe tre ŝatas teknologion, saĝtelefonojn, sociajn retojn kaj tiel plu. Tiuj iloj vere kunportis Esperanton al nova generacio, sed multaj el tiu generacio tute maltrafis la spertojn, kiujn ni maljunuloj ĝuis dum niaj fruaj jaroj de Esperanta agado. La raraj kaj karaj renkontiĝoj! Multaj el ni memoras pasigi horojn por ĉeesti renkontiĝon, aŭ flugi al alia lando, aŭ eĉ telefoni al nekonato, simple ĉar tiu enlistiĝis en la membroliston de nia landa asocio kaj loĝas ne tro malproksime.

Kiel rekapti tiun sperton por la aktuala junularo? Ĉu vere estas fendo inter la malnova versio de Esperantujo kaj la nova interreta versio? Aŭ ĉu povas ekzisti ponto inter la du mondoj? Dum MeKaRo ni pasigis kelkajn horojn piedirante tra la urbo Granbio serĉante “portalojn” por la ludo Ingress, pri kiu unu amikino estas entuziasmulo. (Ĝi similas al Pokémon Go, kiu tiam ankoraŭ ne aperis.) Ŝi parolis multe pri tio kiel la saĝtelefona teknologio havas la efikon instigi homojn iri eksteren kaj vidi la veran mondon, kaj renkonti homojn vizaĝ-al-vizaĝe. Mi miris kiel multe ni malkovris pri la urbo Granbio kaj pri la fizika mondo ĉirkaŭ ni, helpate de tiuj iloj, ne flankdistrite de ili, kiel mi antaŭsupozis.

Tiel ekflamis la ideo. Ni povus uzi la povon de la nova teknologio por instigi homojn renkonti aliajn homojn en la vera mondo. La ideo pli kaj pli firmiĝis. Ni havos plurajn eventojn la saman tagon. Ĉiun eventon organizos lokano, kaj ni klopodos havigi simplan ŝablonon por la eventoj. Ni decidis, ke kvar horoj estus la ideala maksimuma vojaĝ-distanco. Tiel oni povus vojaĝi matene, komenci je tagmezo, kaj fini je 20.00 kaj ankoraŭ reiri hejmen sen bezono tranokti. Ni sugestis, ke evento inkluzivu tagmanĝon kaj vespermanĝon, kun aliaj agadoj intertempe.

Ni emfazis, ke fakte estas tre facile organizi eventon – nur sugestu restoraciojn por la du manĝoj, kaj agadon inter la du. La agadoj estis kutimaj por Esperanto-aranĝoj – muzeoj, natur-promenadoj, keglo-ludado, serĉludoj, k.t.p. Kelkaj eventoj estis tre detale organizitaj, kaj kelkaj estis neformalaj kaj malpli longaj ol la sugestitaj 8 horoj. Do ŝajne la ŝablono estas sufiĉe fleksebla por taŭgi por la diversaj bezonoj de eventoj en diversaj lokoj.
Komencite, la afero rapide kreskis. Ni volis uzi jam pretan teknologion, ĉar mankis tempo kaj sperto krei novajn ilojn. Do ni ĉefe uzis Google-grupon kaj Facebook-on. Plej grava estis la mapo farita per Google Maps, per kiu ni povis montri la lokojn de la proponitaj eventoj kun ligiloj al la diskutfadenoj. Por komuniki dum la eventoj mem, ni elektis la programon Telegram – rapida mesaĝilo, kiu funkcias per saĝtelefonoj kaj komputiloj, kaj per kiu oni povas facile kunhavigi fotojn, videojn, geografiajn lokojn, ktp.

Kompreneble, ne ĉio iris perfekte. Okazis problemoj de trafiko, pluvo, varmeco, kiuj malhelpis kelkajn partoprenantojn. Sed finfine la eventaro estis pli sukcesa ol ni atendis. El la 28 anoncitaj eventoj, 25 vere okazis, kaj kelkaj el la eventoj estis mirige grandaj, inkluzive de novaj vizaĝoj kaj malnovaj ne viditaj dumlonge. Spertuloj multe komentis pri la surprize alta parolkapablo de la novuloj, kiu evidentigas kaj la facilecon de nia lingvo kaj la efikecon de novaj lern-rimedoj.

Mi aparte ŝatas la rakonton pri la plej malgranda evento, kiu estis por la organizanto la unua fojo paroli Esperanton kun alia homo – kaj tiu alia homo eklernis ĝin antaŭ 51 jaroj. Tio estas precize la sperto, kiun ni celis krei per Paralela Universo. Ni esperas, ke tiu ĉi eventaro povos esti unu plia ilo en nia il-skatolo por vigligi la Esperantan movadon en Nord-Ameriko kaj pretere. Venontjare ni klopodos kreskigi la eventon ankaŭ en Sud-Ameriko, kaj eventuale en aliaj kontinentoj, se estas intereso. Mi esperas vidi vin ĉe Paralela Universo 2017!

​On 20 August  more than 210 people in 4 North American countries took part in 25 distinct Esperanto meetings at the same time, as part of a new set of events titled Parallel Universe.  The events ranged in size and complexity, from 3 to 28 participants.

Many of the participants were relatively new and in several events the majority of the people present met other esperanto speakers for the first time in their lives.  These events were organised rather suddenly, with only nine weeks passing from the first online mention and the events themselves.  On the day, participants of different events stayed in touch with each other and shared photos and videos of their activities.

Why and how did it come about?
North America can be a difficult place for an Esperanto-speaker to live.  We envy the variety of Esperanto events in Europe, where multilingualism  raises (the profile of) the "language problem" in the consciousness of the society.  Here the distances  are longer and, if there  is no strong local club, many esperantists infrequently have the opportunity  to enjoy the vibe of an Esperanto event or even to speak the language face-to-face.

This state of affairs is particularly lamentable when a new wave of learners appear in our continent thanks to the smash hit that is Duolingo.  More than 500 000 people are registered as learners of Esperanto on this website, and every day 30 people finish the elementary course.  Because the course uses English, a great part of these learners live in North America. 

So, how to capture this wave, and introduce newcomers to our community before they lose interest?  That is the challenge which I faced, when I was asked to become the coordinator of youth activities of the Canadian Esperanto Association.  The creation of this position was instigated by my proposal that Toronto should host the IJK (Youth Congress) in 2019 if Montreal hosts the World Congress of Esperanto. To do that we must first revive our youth section Canada Esperanto Youth!
​I accepted the load hesitantly, because I am no longer a youth, but there was no obvious candidate of the right age, so I accepted it with the thought that my first task would be to find my successor.  So, how can one attract youth who are active? Or make those already attracted, active. Because it is too difficult to make those who are already active and attracted young, these were the only possibilities.  At MeKaRo in May 2016 I discussed the matter at length with my friends. 
Well, lately young people really like technology, smart phones, social  networks and so on.  These tools really carried Esperanto to a new generation, but many of that generation are completely missing the experiences that us older people enjoyed during our early years of Esperanto activity.  The rare and dear get-togethers! Many of us remember spending hours to participate in meetings, or flying to another country, or even calling a stranger, simply because they are listed in the member list of our national association and don't live too far away.

How to recapture this experience for the current youth? Is there really a fracture between the old version of Esperanto-land and the new internet version?  Or can a bridge between the two worlds exist? During MeKaRo we spent several hours walking through the town Granby, looking for "portals" for the game Ingress, of which one friend was a fan. (It is similar to Pokémon Go, which had not yet been available at that time).  She spoke a lot about how smart phone technology has the effect to encourage people to go outside and see the real world, and meet people face-to-face.  I was amazed at how much we discovered about the town Granby and about the physical world around us, with the help of these tools, not being side-tracked by them, as I had expected.
So the idea ignited. We could use the power of the new technology to encourage people to meet other people in real life.  The idea became firmer.  We will have many events on the same day.  Each event will be organised by a local, and we will try to provide a simple template for the events.  We decided that four hours should be the ideal maximum traveling distance.  That way one could start traveling in the morning, start at noon, and finish by 20h00 and still return home without having to stay the night.  We suggested that an event should include lunch and supper, with other activities in between.

We stressed, that it is actually very easy to organise an event - just suggest a restaurant for the two meals, and the activities in between the two. The activities were the usual for Esperanto events - museums, nature walks, bowling, treasure hunts, etc.  Some events were actually organised in a lot of detail, and some were informal and shorter than the suggested 8 hours.  So it seems the template is flexible enough to suit the various needs of events in different places.
Once started, the matter grew rapidly.  WE wanted to use technology that was already available, because there was no time and experience to create new tools.  So we mainly used a Google group and Facebook.  The most important was the map made using Google Maps, with which we cour show the locations of the proposed events with links to the discussion threads.  To communicate during the events themselves we selected the app Telegram - an instant messaging client, which works on smart phones and computers, and with which one could easily collect photos, video clips, geographical locations etc.
Of course, not everything went perfectly.  Traffic, rain, and heat were some of the problems which hindered some participants.  But in the end the events were more successful than we had expected.  Out of the 28 events that had been announced, 25 actually took place, and a few of the events were wonderfully big, including new faces and old ones not seen for a long time.  Experienced people commented a lot about the surprisingly high level of speaking ability of the newcomers, which proves both how easy our language is and the effectiveness of the new learning resources.

I particularly enjoy the story of the smallest event, which was the first time that the organiser spoke Esperanto with another person - and that other person had learnt Esperanto 51 years ago.  That is exactly the experience that we tried to create with Parallel Universe.  We hope that these events could be one more tool in our toolbox to reinvigorate the Esperanto movement in North America and beyond.  Next year we wil try to grow the event also in South America, and eventually in other continents if there is interest.  I hope to see you at Parallel Universe 2017!

Kadre de la Johannesburg Esperanto Meetup Group (kunordigita pere de la retejo Meetup.com) okazis kuna renkontiĝo de  Johannesburgaj kaj Pretoriaj Esperantistoj ĉe la kafejo Nino's en Rosebank.

Entute partoprenis 8 personoj, inter kiuj 1 vizitanto el Durbano, 2 komencantoj el Pretorio, kaj nova vizaĝo el Johannesburgo,.  Por la novulo, Hanno, estis la unua fojo renkonti kaj paroli kun aliaj Esperantistoj kvankam li mem lernis jam por iom da tempo.  Komencanto Neill el Pretorio multe progresis post du semajnoj da lernado, kaj jam komencis skribi mesaĝojn en Esperanto. 

La kunveno sekvis la sabatmatenan kurson ĉe Magri's Language Institute.  Ankaŭ la kursanoj Vusi kaj Jan espereble baldaŭ babilos Esperantlingve.

As part of the Johannesburg Esperanto Meetup Group (coordinated using the website Meetup.com) a combined meeting of  esperantists from Johannesburg and Pretoria took place at the coffee shop Nino's in Rosebank

In total 8 people participated, including 1 visitor from Durban, 2 beginners from Pretoria and a new face from Johannesburg.  For the newcomer, Hanno, it was the first time meeting and speaking with other Esperantists although he has been learning through self-study for some time.  Beginner Neill from Pretoria has made a lot of progress after 2 weeks of study and has already started messaging in Esperanto.

The meeting followed the Saturday-morning course at Magri's Language Institute.  The students Vusi and Jan will also hopefully soon chat in Esperanto.

Kristnaskfesto en Julio... jen verkaĵo de Raita Pyhala, finnlanda Esperantisto.

Julo – alia nomo de Kristnasko. La vorto Julo devenas de praĝermana lingvo, kie ĝi signifis vintromezan feston. En finna lingvo joulu estas Julo/kristnasko kaj juhla estas festo, en sveda lingvo jul signifas Kristnasko, en angla lingvo troviĝas la malnova nomo Yule. Mi uzas la Esperantan Julo-vorton por aludi al la nekristanaj radikoj de la vintromeza festo. Ĉiu familio kaj unuopulo havas sian ideon pri Julo, sed ankaŭ kelkaj komunaj naciaj trajtoj distingeblas.

En Finnlando Julo povas esti pia aŭ ebria. Tio estas, ke dum unuj petolemas kaj drinkas ĝis ebriiĝo kaj familia perforto, aliaj serioze solenas la naskiĝon de Jesuo, legas evangelion, kantas religiajn kantojn hejme, vizitas meson aŭ spektas ĝin televide. La ekstremaĵojn mi ne priskribos pli detale. Mi provas rakonti pli ĝenerale, pli averaĝe, kvankam la averaĝo neniam vere ekzistas.

Julo estas tre atendata, ofte idealigita festo, kiu helpas nordanojn elporti la ofte aĉan veteron kaj daŭran mankon de lumo. Verdire ĝi ne estas nur unu festo sed festosezono daŭranta de la komenco de decembro ĝis la dua semajno de januaro. La unua Advento (unua decembra dimanĉo) estas ĝia solena inaŭguro. Ĉiuj volas aŭdi kaj kanti la imponan Hosanan de la germana komponisto G.J. Vogler, en preĝejoj, radio, televido, lernejoj. Jam antaŭ tio enŝteliĝas multloken la komerca faceto: reklamoj, bazaroj, jula muziko kaj - en Finnlando – juletoj, kiuj estas gajaj eventoj kun kolegoj, samlernejanoj, geamikaro aŭ iu alia rondo. La programo konsistas el kunkantado, ludoj, bonaj manĝaĵoj/trinkaĵoj, donacetoj, dancado. En infanvartejoj la etuloj ŝategas vesti sin kiel koboldoj, anĝeloj kaj elfoj, ofte ili prezentas la kristnaskan evangelion aŭ kaj fabelteatraĵetojn.En Svedio la juletojn de plenkreskuloj eble anstataŭas restoraciaj manĝoj julbord, kie oni povas ĝui multajn tradiciajn julopladojn kaj gajan kompanion je pli malpli alta prezo. En Finnlando lernejoj kaj studejoj povas havi Julofeston, Piceofeston en la fino de la aŭtuna semestro. Por ĝi la stabo kaj lernantoj arde kunlaboras, sed nuntempe kelkaj enmigrintoj plendas pro la kristanaj programeroj.

Altegaj lumigataj piceoj estas starigataj antaŭ publikaj konstruaĵoj, en placoj kaj preĝejoj. Ene en vendejoj kaj aliaj konstruaĵoj aperas malpli grandaj plastaj similaĵoj. (Abioj en Nordio ne nature kreskas. En Laponio oni uzas pinojn, se ne haveblas piceoj.) Ĝis tediĝo en vendejoj estas ludataj julokantoj, precipe gajaj internaciaj melodioj, kies plejparto devenas de Britio, Usono. Onidire origine finnaj julokantoj estas malgajaj, malrapidaj, plenaj de sopiro. Pli gajaj kantoj venis de Svedio. Kantoj venis ankaŭ de Germanio, kaj nur pli ĵuse de Francio kaj aliaj eŭropaj landoj. En finnaj preĝejoj oni okazigas kunkantadon nomatan La plej belaj julokantoj laŭ kajereto ĉiujare nova. En la kajereto troviĝas ĝirilo por kolekti monon por finna luterana (protestanta) misio, aŭ antaŭ ol eliri la kunkantintoj libervole lasas monon en iu ujo. Tiuj ĉi eventoj tre plaĉas al homoj, la preĝejoj plenplenas ripete, eĉ pli ol 20-foje dum decembro/frua januaro.




​En Nordio oni tre aprezas la julan lumigadon de stratoj, kortoj, parkoj, hejmaj kaj nehejmaj fenestroj. En Stokholmo la jula lumigado estas pli abunda kaj varia ol en Helsinko, sed ankaŭ kampare en ambaŭ landoj vilaĝoj kaj urbetoj plibeligas sin per elektraj steloj kaj girlandoj. La ĉefa strato de Helsinko, siatempe nomata laŭ la rusa caro Aleksandro, ĉiam levigas lumajn kaligrafiajn A-ojn super si. Tio estas nerompebla finna tradicio. Ĉe aliaj finnaj stratoj la dekoracio ŝanĝiĝas ĉiujare. En 2015 aperis grandaj oraj boacoj kaj arĝentaj piceoj ĉirkaŭ la finna nacia poeto J.L. Runeberg. En la stokholma placo Sergel oni tiajn de longe vidas. Tiel ni nordanoj luktas kontraŭ malhelo kaj deprimo ĉirkaŭ la vintra solstico.

La 13a de decembro estas granda festotago precipe en Svedio. Tiam frumatene aperas Lucia, junulino portanta lumon, ĝojon, kuraĝigon, bonan kafon kun dolĉa safrane spicita bulko. La solenaĵon oni povas vidi televide. Ankaŭ en Finnlando svedlingvanoj havas longan tradicion de Lucia-festoj, sed finnlingvanoj unue opiniis, ke ili ne povas adopti tian svedaĵon. Nun tamen Lucia-tagon festas ankaŭ finnlingvanoj. La plej granda solenaĵo tiutage okazas vespere en la katedralo de Helsinko, kie la ”tutlanda” Lucia estas kronata. Ŝi kaj ŝia kunulinaro devas flue paroli kaj bele kanti en ambaŭ lingvoj. Ili havos multegajn bonfarajn kaj PR-taskojn post la festo. En televido oni montras la tutan feston en la svedlingva kanalo sed nur mallongan parton en la finnlingva kanalo.

La plej grava festotago de la jaro por finnoj estas la 24a de decembro, kiu ankau en Svedio gravas, sed tie eble la junia festo Midsommar superas Julon. Posttagmeze 24.12. en Finnlando komenciĝas jula paco, jula trankvilo. La publika trafiko preskaŭ ĉesas, vendejoj fermiĝas. Homoj kolektiĝas en hejmoj. (Nur malbonŝanculoj ne sukcesas invitigi sin al iu familio aŭ rondo. Kelkaj homoj turismas eksterlande por eviti la premon ariĝi kaj festi familie, kelkaj stranguloj obstine restas solaj en siaj apartamentoj, ignorante Julon.) Antaŭ la 24.12 oni sendas milionojn da kartoj kaj mesaĝoj por deziri Hyvää joulua ja onnellista uutta vuotta, svede God Jul och Gott Nytt År. Oni telefonadas al foraj familianoj kaj al la plej karaj geamikoj. Oni vizitas tombejojn por ekbruligi kandelojn por forpasintaj karuloj. Ĉiel oni volas renodi rilatojn en sia parenca aŭ samideana amika rondo. La kutimo viziti tombejon kaj bruligi tie kandelon aŭ lanternon kristnaske pli vastas en Finnlando ol en Svedio, ĉar preskaŭ ĉiu finno perdis parencon aŭ amaton en la militoj 1939-1945. La mortintojn oni transportis de la fronto hejmen por enterigi ilin en la hejmloka tombejo.

Ĝuinda parto de la 24a tago estas la julomanĝo. La pladoj iom diferencas en Svedio kaj Finnlando. Tradicie finnoj surtelerigas al si ŝinkon, boligitajn terpomojn, rosolli (kolora miksaĵo de pecigitaj malvarmaj karotoj kaj ruĝaj betoj), en forno longe bakitajn karotaĵon, brasiknapaĵon, terpomaĵon, hepat-rizaĵon (nomataj laatikko t.e. ”skatoloj”). Ofte haveblas ankaŭ salitaj spicita haringo kaj salmo/truto. Sur la sveda jultelero vidiĝas kolbasetoj, viandobuletoj, ŝinko, legomaĵoj. Antaŭe finnoj trinkis hejme faritan ŝaumantan duonbieron aŭ lakton, nun ankaŭ akvon, alkoholaĵojn. Svedoj havas tre dolĉan bierecan trinkaĵon julmust, ku iom similas al kokakolao. (Pardonon, svedoj, pro la komparo!) Nuntempe aperas novaj, alilandaj trinkaĵoj kaj pladoj, meleagro, oni ja volas ĉion provi.

La mistikan ulon, kiu vespere la 24an portas donacojn al infanoj kaj plenkreskuloj, oni nomas Joulupukki en la finna, Tomte en la sveda kaj inter svedlingvaj finnoj Julgubbe aŭ Julbocken. Dum lia sopirata vizito ofte okazas, ke iu el la viraj ĉeestantoj forestas! Kelkajn familiojn vizitas alte kaj sekrete salajrata profesiulo. Ĉiuokaze li alparolas la infanojn, kantigas ilin, demandas, ĉu ĉiuj bone kondutis dum la jaro. Nun li estas ruĝe vestita kaj povas havi ruĝe vestitan koboldohelpanton kun si. Antaŭe liaj koloroj estis bruna/griza/nigra, li vestis sin per reversitaj peltaĵoj, vojaĝis de loko al loko en sledo tirata de ĉevalo. Ofte li surhavis maskon kaj endome plendis pro sia malbona vido, legigis al iu la nomojn sur la donacoj. En Finnlando oni imagis, ke li kun sia edzino kaj kobolda infanaro loĝas ĉe Orelmonto Korvatunturi, sed nun lia posteulo kun sia stabo loĝas proksime al la urbo Rovaniemi, allogante kaj amuzante turistojn je sia propra profito. Korvatunturi nun situas tro proksime al la rusa limo, tie oni ne plu rajtas loĝi. Danoj imagas, ke la donacema Julavo loĝas en Grenlando kaj svedoj verŝajne, ke li loĝas ie en norda Laponio. Antaŭ tre tre longe Julboko havis kornojn kiel virkapro – la tirbesto uzata de la skandinavia dio Tor, timiga kaj brua fortulo, dio de fekundeco kaj tondro. Kelkfoje kaj kelkloke vilaĝanojn post aŭ antaŭ Kristnasko perturbis aliaj ”bokoj”, viroj el la najbaraĵo postulantaj regaladon per frandaĵoj kaj alkoholaĵoj kaj timigante la tutan domanaron. Se ili venis ĉ. la 13a de januaro, oni en Finnlando nomis ilin Nuuttipukki, ĉar la 13a de jan. estas la nomtago de Knuto, iama dana reĝo. Ankoraŭ nun oni serĉe diras : Bona Tomaso (21.12) kunportas la Julon, malbona Knuto ĝin forportas.

La hejman festoarbon oni serĉas en sia propra arbaro aŭ en la arbaro de parencoj aŭ amikoj, aŭ oni segas ĝin en kultivata jularbaro, antaŭpaginte la prezon. Tia ekskurseto ĉarmas infanojn kaj plenkreskulojn. Preskaŭ same plaĉas aĉetado ĉe iu subĉiela vendanto, kiu povas havi ankaŭ abiojn. La branĉoj de nature kreskinta piceo estas malpli densaj kaj fortaj ol tiuj de kultivitaj piceoj kaj abioj, ĉar la kultivisto dum 5 jaroj tondas la branĉopintojn por ke ili dividiĝu kaj plifortiĝu. La prezoj en Helsinko estas multoblaj kompare kun aliaj urb(et)oj. Oni dekoracias la piceon per hereditaj aŭ memfaritaj ornamaĵoj aŭ per suveniroj el vizititaj julobazaroj. Sur la pinton kaj svedoj kaj finnoj metas stelon. Malmultaj homoj uzas verajn ”vivantajn” stearinkandeletojn, la elektraj ja estas pli sekuraj. La picea odoro, kandela lumo, tradicioj kaj memoroj kreas la nordian juloetoson.

Yule  – another name for Christmas. The word Yule derives from an ancient Germanic language, where it means a mid-winter festival. In Finnish, joulo is Yule/Christmas and juhla is festival, in Swedish jul means Christmas, in English the old name Yule is found. I use the Esperanto word  "Julo" to allude to the non-Christian origin of the mid-winter festival. Each family and individual has their own idea about (nordic) Yule, but a few common national traits can be distinguished.

In Finland Yule can be pious or rowdy.  That is, while some are mischievous and drink to the point of intoxication and domestic violence, other seriously celebrate the birth of Jesus, read the Gospel, sing carols at home, attend Mass or watch it on TV.  I will not describe the extremes in more detail.  I am trying to give a more general account, more average, although the average never really exists.

Yule is an eagerly awaited, often idealised festival, which helps the population to endure the frequently awful weather and continuous lack of light. In truth it is not just one festival but a festive season lasting from the beginning of December until the second week of January.  The first Advent (first Sunday of December) is its official start.  Everyone wants to listen to and sing the magnificent Hosanna by the German composer G.J. Vogler, in churches, on radio, television, in schools. Prior to that, in many places, the commercial aspect has already crept in: advertisements, shops, Christmas music and - in Finnland - Yulettes, which are cheerful events with colleagues, fellow students, friends or some other circle.  The programme consists of singing, games, good food/drink, small gifts, dancing.  In créches the little ones adore dressing up like gnomes, angels and elves, often they perform nativity plays or fables. In Sweden the adult Yulettes are replaced by the restaurant meals called julbord, where one can enjoy many traditional Yuletide dishes and cheerful  company at a rather costly price. In Finland schools and institutions can have a Yuletide festival, the Spruce festival at the end of the autumn semester.  For this the staff and students work together passionately, but nowadays some immigrants complain about the Christian content.

​Very tall illuminated spruce trees are erected in front of public buildings, in squares and churches.  Inside shops and other buildings smaller plastic imitations are displayed. (Fir trees do not occur naturally in Nordic countries.  In Lapland pine trees are used, if spruce trees are not available).  In shops Christmas songs are played to the point of boredom, mainly cheerful international melodies, mostly from Britain, USA.  They say that original Finnish Yule songs are dreary, slow and full of yearning.  Merrier tunes came from Sweden.  Songs also came from Germany, and only more recently from France and other European countries.  In Finnish churches they sing "The most beautiful Christmas songs" using a booklet of songs updated every year.  In the booklet there is a form to collect money for the Finnish Lutheran (protestant) mission, or before leaving the singers voluntarily leave money in some container.  These events are really popular, the churches are repeatedly filled to capacity, even more than 20 times during December/early January.

In Nordic countries they highly value the Christmas lights in streets, courtyards, parks, and windows of homes and buildings.  In Stockholm the Christmas lights are more abundant and varied  than in Helsinki, but in both countries also rural villages and towns adorn themselves using electric stars and wreaths.  The main street of Helsinki, then named after the Russian tsar Alexander, always has illuminated calligraphic A's raised above it.  That is an unbreakable Finnish tradition.  In other Finnish streats the decorations are changed each year.  In 2015 big golden reindeer and silver spruces were displayed near the (statue of) Finnish national poet J.L. Runeberg. In Sergel Square in Stockholm these kind of decorations have been seen for a long time.  So we Nordics struggle against darkness and depression around the Winter solstice.

The 13th of December is a big day of celebration, mainly in Sweden.  Then, early in the morning, Lucy appears carrying light, joy, encouragement, good coffee with sweet saffron-spiced buns.  The celebration can be seen on television.  In Finland too, Swedish-speaking Finns have a long tradition of the Feast of Saint Lucy, but Finnish-speakers thought at first that they can not adopt such a Swedish thing. Now however Saint Lucy's day is celebrated by Finnish-speaking Finns too. The biggest celebration of that day takes place in the evening in the Helsinki cathedral, where the "national" Lucy is crowned. She and her procession have to speak fluently, and sing beautifully in both languages.  They will have many charity and PR tasks after the festival. The whole festival is shown on TV on the Swedish channel, but only a short part on the Finnish channel.

​The most important day of celebration of the year for Finnish people is the 24th of December, which is also important in Sweden, but there the June festival Midsommar possibly supercedes Yule.  On the afternoon of the 24th a Yuletide peace, Yuletide calm starts in Finland.  Public transport almost ceases, shops close.  People gather in their homes. (Only unlucky people fail to get themselves invited to some family or circle. Some people take a holiday abroad to avoid the pressure of gathering and celebrating with family, some strange people stubbornly stay alone in their apartments, ignoring Yule.) Before the 24th, milions of cards and messages are sent wishing Hyvää joulua ja onnellista uutta vuotta, in Swedish God Jul och Gott Nytt År .  People call faraway relatives and dearest friends.  People visit graves to light candles for their dearly departed.  In every way people want to rebind relations in their circle of relatives and friends.  The custom of visiting graves and lighting a candle or lantern there at Christmas is more wide-spread in Finnland than in Sweden, because almost every Finn lost a parent or loved one in the wars from 1939-1945.  The deceased were transported from the front to be buried close to home.

An enjoyable part of the 24th is the Yule meal.  The dishes differ somewhat in Sweden and Finland.  Traditionally the Finnish plate up ham, boiled potatoes, rosolli (colourful mix of chopped cold carrots and red beets), carrots baked in the oven, turnips, potatoes, a dish made from liver and rice (called laatikko, i.e. "boxes").  Often salted, spiced herring and salmon/trout is available. On the Swedish Yule-plate the can be seen:  small sausages, meat balls, ham, vegetables.  Previously Finns drank home-made foaming half-beer or milk, now also water and alcoholic beverages.  Swedes have a very sweet beer-like drink julmust, which is somewhat similar to Coca-Cola (Pardon me swedes, for the comparison!) Nowadays new, foreign drinks and dishes, turkey, appear, people  do indeed want to try everything.

The mystical guy, who on the evening of the 24th brings gifts to children and adults, is named Joulupukki in Finnish, Tomte in Swedish and amongst Swedish-speaking Finns Julgubbe or Julbocken.  During his much awaited visit it often happens, that one of the attending males is away! Some families are visited by a highly and secretly paid professional.  In any event, he speaks to the children, makes them sing, asks whether everyone had behaved themselves during the year.  Now he is dressed in red and can have a gnome-assistant, also dressed in red, with him.  Previously his colours were brown/grey/black, he wore pelts turned inside-out, travelled from place to place in a horse-drawn sleigh.  He often wore a mask and indoors complained about his bad eye-sight, made someone read the names on the gifts.  In Finland one imagines that he lives at Ear Mountain Korvatunturi  together with wife and gnome children, but now his successor and his staff live close to the town Rovaniemi, attracting and amusing turists for his own profit. Korvatunturi is now situated too close to the russian border, there one may no longer live.  The Danish imagine, that the giving Father Christmas lives in Greenland and the Swedish, probably, that he lives somewhere in northern Lapland.  Very very long ago Julboko had horns like a ram - the draught animal used by the scandinavian god Thor, a frightning, noisy and strong, god of fertility and thunder. Sometimes and in some places other "rams" bothered villagers after or before Christmas, men from the neighbourhood demanding to be treated to delicacies and alcohol and frightening the entire household.  If they came around the 13th of January, people in Finland called them Nuuttipukki, because the 13th of Jan is the name-day of Canute, once a Danish king.  We still say jokingly: "Good Thomas (21 Dec) brought the Yule, bad Canuto carries it away."

People look for the home festive tree in their own forests or that of relatives or friends or they are cut down in a cultivated Yule-forest, having paid the price in advance.  Almost as pleasent is buying from an outdoors vendor, which can also have pine trees.  The branches of a spruce tree grown naturally are less dense and less strong than those of cultivated spruce and pine trees, because the cultivator trims the tips of the branches for 5 years so that they divide and become stronger.  Prices in Helsinki are much greater compared to other towns and villages.  The spruce tree is decorated with hairloom or homemade ornaments or with souveniers from Christmas markets.

​The website was created by Martin Rue, who has the following to say about it: "I created it to show that there are Esperanto speakers everywhere on earth, and that Esperanto is indeed a living language."

You can now listen to and vote for all entries in the 3rd Kontakto music competition.  In this year's competition there are 14 songs from various well-known professional and amateur artists.  For the first time there are not one, but two entries from Africa.  One from the veteran artist Denis Rock Tamba and the other from novice Esperantist Boozy B.

The artists Tiu Ne Gravas, Jonny M and Barok-project (who won 2nd prize in the 1st competition) are taking part for the second time. You will also find first-time entries from the well-known Esperanto musicians i.d.c. and Patrik Auston with brand new songs.  As usual, we also received several versions of translated songs. For this competition 3 came from italian singers and one from brazillian Mikel Klav, who is participating for the 3rd time!

If you, like me, are quite attached to our mobile phone, or "poŝtelefono" (pocket phone), you will be glad to know there are some great Esperanto-related apps.

PReVO
PReVo is a dictionary application - something that everyone needs.  The name is short for Poŝa Reta Vortaro, and it is the mobile version of the excellent Reta Vortaro website.  One interesting feature of PReVO is that it allows searching, and shows results from several European languages.

Muzaiko
Another necessity (for daily life, if not Esperanto study) is music.   The Muzaiko app allows streaming from the eponymous online radio station hosted at http://muzaiko.info/.  In addition to music there are also interesting news, interviews and discussions.

Games
For iOS users who feel a bit left out, take a look at ludisto.com, a games publishing company founded by Esperantist Chuck Smith.  All their games, like Word Race pictured below, are playable in Esperanto.  Visit the website for more info.

On almost every day of the year there is an Esperanto meeting somewhere on Earth, as can be seen in the Calendar for 2016.  People meet for various reasons.  There are national Esperanto conferences like the 57th Argentinian  (57a Argentina Kongreso de Esperanto),  and the 103rd Japanese (La 103-a Japana Esperanto-Kongreso ), not forgetting the 1st Venezuelan Esperanto Congress in Merida, see the video below. (1-a Venezuela Kongreso de Esperanto). There are courses and study sessions  such as the North American Summer Courses (Nord-Amerika Somera Kursaro, NASK) and the SOMERAS study week at Castle Grezillon in France (SOMERAS, Esperanto-studad-semajno post FESTO).  There are road trips like the minibus trip through Iran (Minibusvojaĝo tra Irano) and "caravans", such as the one from Moscow by train to China for the 8th Asian Congress (Karavano al la 8-a Azia kongreso) and hiking from the Romanian Carpathian Mountains to the Danube Delta and the Black Sea (Vizitu Rumanion de Karpatoj ĝis la Delto de Danubo kaj la Nigra Maro! ). There are cultural events like the Film-Theater Festival during NASK ( Kino-Teatro-Festivalo - 2016), and the 30th Esperanto Culture Festival in Sweden (Kultura Esperanto-Festivalo 10-20-30). For the more sporting inclined, there are hiking trips in France (3a Printempa Migrado) and in the Ukraine (Piedmarŝo "Milan Zvara") and sailing on the Mediterranean off the coast of Italy (VELADO sur la Mediteranea Maro!).  Lastly there are of course the well-known world congresses of UEA, the UK for adults in Nitra, Slovakia (Universala Kongreso de Esperanto, UK-101), and the IJK for youth in  Wrocław, Poland (72-a Internacia Junulara Kongreso).  Keep an eye out for an Esperanto event in or near your dream destination.

La honora Sekretario de la Asocio ricevis atestilon de la Universala Esperanto-Asocio pro long-daŭra membreco.  Li estas jam membro dum 40 jaroj.  Gratulojn, kaj estu multaj pli!

La 15an de Decembro Esperantistoj ĉirkaŭ la mondo festas Zamenhof-tago, aŭ Esperanto Librotago.  Skribis Stefano Keller, estrarano de UEA:  "La 15-a de decembro estas la naskiĝtago de L.L. Zamenhof (1859- 1917), kreinto de Esperanto. Laŭ iniciato de unu el niaj signifaj verkistoj, Julio Baghy, ni festas tiam ankaŭ la Esperantan kulturon.  Por la plialtigo de la spirita nivelo de la esperantistaro, Baghy proponis ke la Zamenhof-tago estu ankaŭ la tago de la Esperanta libro. Dum kultura evento lokaj grupoj informu ne-esperantistojn pri la internacia lingvo, ties abunda literaturo originala kaj tradukita. Ni elmontru, kiel nia movado disvastigas kulturverkojn de diversaj etnoj, ebligante al alilingvanoj la ĝuadon de verkoj alipopolaj. "

Ĉi-jare mi speciale rimarkis raportojn el Azio,  Hanojo (Vjetnamio), kaj Pingtung (Tajvano).

On 15 December Esperantists around the world celebrate Zamenhof Day, or Day of the Esperanto Book.  Stefan Keller, board member of UEA writes:  The 15th of December is the birthday of the creator of Esperanto, L.L. Zamenhof (1859-1917).  As initiated by Julio Daĝy, one of our significant authors, on that day we also celebrate Esperanto culture.  To raise the "spiritual" level of Esperanto speakers, Baghy proposed that Zamenhof Day should also be the Day of the Esperanto Book.  During a cultural event, local groups should inform non-Esperantists about the international language, its abundant literature, original and translated).  We should show, how our movement speads cultural works of diverse ethnicities, enabling speakers of other languages to enjoy the works of other nationalities." 

This year two reports from Asia caught my eye: Hanoi (Vietnam) and Pingtung (Taiwan).

Hoan Tran raportis: "Hodiaŭ matene Vjetnama Esperanto-Asocio (VEA) festis Zamenhof-tagon kaj "Esperanta Libro-Tago"-n 2015 en la sidejo de VUAO (Vjetnama Unio de Amikecaj Organizoj), Hanojo. Ĉeestis pli ol 30 homoj esperantista kaj neesperantista. Estis rimarkinde, ke partoprenis en la festo du reprezentantoj de FSI firmao, kiu subvenciis skanadon de esperantaj libroj eldonitaj de VEA. Krome, ĉijare ni bonvenigis s-ron Augusto Casquero, hispana esperantisto, bona amiko de vjetnamaj esperantistoj. 
Kiel kutime, ni prezentis mallonge pri L. L Zamenhof kaj klarigis al ĉeestantoj, aparte al neesperantistaj pri la signifon de Zamenhof-Tago. Krome, okaze de ZamenhofTago ni faris bilancon de faritaĵoj en 2015 kaj proponis farendaĵojn en 2016 tiam, kiam vjetnama esperantistaro festos la 60an datrevenon de la fondiĝo de VEA. Do, ni esprimas nian klopodon plenumi gravajn taskojn en nova jaro." 

Hoan Tran reports: "This morning, the Vietnam Esperanto Association celebrated Zamenhof Day and "Day of the Esperanto Book" 2015 in the seat of the Vietnamese Union of Friendship Organisations.   More than 30 people were present, Esperantists and non-Esperantists.  It was notable that there were two representatives of the company FSI, which supports the scanning of Esperanto books published by VEA.  Furthermore, this year we welcomed mr Augusto Casquero, a spanish Esperantist and good friend of Vietnamese Esperantists.  As usual, we gave a brief presentation about L.L. Zamenhof and explained to those present, especially to non-Esperantists, the significance of Zamenhof Day.  Furthermore, as part of Zamenhof Day we reported on actions taken in 2015 and proposed things to do in 2015, when Vietnamese Esperantists will celebrate the 60th anniversary of VEA.  So, we will try to fulfill important tasks in the new year." 

Raportis Reza Kheirkah (Irana Esperantisto en Tajvano): "Pli ol 30 Esperantistoj kaj ne Esperantistoj partoprenis [la eventon] en Pingtung, suda urbo en Tajvano. Entute el 8 landoj venis la Esperantistaj ĉeestantoj: Tajvano, Kanado, Malajzio, Filipino, Irano, Usono, Honkongo kaj Australio.
 
Dum la festo ni havis Skype kontakton kun Lee Jungkee, estrarano de UEA en Koreio kaj parolis kun liaj studentoj tie, kaj poste kun Chuck Smith, la fondinto de Esperanta Vikipedio kaj Esperantisto de la jaro 2015. Inter la programoj estis:
 
Prelegoj pri Koreio, Esperanto, vojaĝo de Tajvanaj Esperantistoj al Japanio por partopreno en Internacia Ĵamboreo kaj du kongresoj en Kanto kaj Kansai. Ĵonglado, kantado kaj muziko.
 
Dum la paŭzo ni registris UEA membrojn kaj abonantojn de Esperantaj gazetoj." 

Reza Kheirkah (Iranian Esperantist in Taiwan) reports:  "More than 30 Esperantists and non-Esperantists took part in the event in Pingtung, a town in southern Taiwan.  Participants came from 8 countries in total:  Taiwan, Canada, Malaysia, the Philippines, Iran, USA, Hong Kong and Australia.

During the event we had Skype contact with Lee Jungkee, board member of UEA in Korea and spoke with his students there, and afterwards with Chuck Smith, the founder of the Esperanto Wikipedia and Esperantist of the Year 2015.  Among the activities were:

Presentations about Korea, Esperanto, travels of a Taiwanese Esperantist to Japan to take part in the International Jamboree and two conferences in Kanto and Kansai.  Juggling, singing and music.

During the break we signed up UEA members and subscriptions to Esperanto magazines.

Ankaŭ en Sudafriko ni festis ĉirkaŭ Zamenhof Tago.  En Johannesburg, oni ekskursis al  Botanika Ĝardeno Walter Sisulu.  Bedaŭrinde pro diversaj kialoj malmultaj fine povis ĉeesti. Tamen oni ĝuis la ekskurson.  

Also in South Africa we had an event around Zamenhof Day.  In Johannesburg, an outing was organised to the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens.  Unfortunately for various reasons not everyone could attend in the end.  However the outing was enjoyed.
